A chondral defect is a localized area of damage to the articular cartilage, the smooth, fibrous tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. Chondral defects can occur due to a number of reasons, including acute injuries, underlying bone disorders, daily wear and tear, natural aging, or sports-related injuries.
