New System from Acumed Provides Multiple Options for Hand Surgeons

January 25, 2015

The Acumed Hand Fracture System is designed to provide both standard and fracture-specific fixation for metacarpal and phalangeal fractures, as well as fixation for fusions and osteotomies.

Acumed is proud to announce the latest release in its market-leading portfolio of upper extremity products. The Acumed Hand Fracture System features plates for fractures of the metacarpal neck, fractures of the base of the first metacarpal, avulsion fractures, and rotational malunions. The system also contains hexalobe lag screws and threaded titanium K-wires for less complicated fractures. The Small Bone Fixator and Small Bone Distractor are included to round out the surgical options for the hand.

The 13 plates in the system can be bent to fit and cut to length in order to treat a wide variety of fracture patterns. Low-profile plates and screws and a rounded-edge plate cutter are designed to minimize soft tissue irritation.

One of the design surgeons of the system, Randy Bindra, M.D., FRCS said, “We designed the Hand Fracture System with convenience and ease of application in mind. The system includes fracture-specific and standard precontoured plates, external fixators, stick-fit multiscrews and lag screws, giving hand surgeons multiple options for managing the injured hand.”

The other design surgeon of the system, Mark S. Cohen, M.D., added, “The Acumed Hand Fracture system was created by engineers and surgeons in an effort to combine the best features of currently available implant designs. The instrumentation and implants are user friendly and will provide one system that will cover many aspects of fracture care and reconstruction of the hand.”

The Hand Fracture System includes Acumed Hexalobe MultiScrews, which act as locking and nonlocking screws in one, allowing variable angles of up to 15 degrees in any direction for a total of 30 degrees. The plates in the system come in two thicknesses (0.8 mm and 1.3 mm) and both diameters of the Hexalobe MultiScrew (1.5 mm and 2.3 mm) can be used with either plate thickness.

“We’re very pleased to apply the ingenuity and experience of our design engineers, combined with the clinical expertise of our design surgeons, Dr. Mark Cohen and Dr. Randy Bindra, to the new Hand Fracture System,” stated Rich Rice, Vice President of Extremities, Trauma, and Biologics. “There is a great need for hand surgeons to have a comprehensive yet straightforward system at their fingertips so they can treat everything from common to difficult hand fractures, with both internal and external fixation options in one kit.”
